Yesterday brought snow. (Actually, so did today. Whatever.) Yesterday’s sky was a crazy mix of blue and gray. The picture I posted yesterday was northwest facing, with blue sky scraped by high wispy clouds. Same sky yesterday, southeast facing, was a crazy, cloud-filled, hazy-sunned sky.

Sometime you’re standing there, minding your own business, waiting with your kid for the morning bus, and you look up and see the trees and can’t believe how tall they are, especially compared to the kids waiting for the bus, and you get that sudden feeling of just how tiny we humans are in the world. This was one of those mornings.

I love how this one turned out. This is simply a shot of some trees along a path where I work, with the sun partially obscured by one of them. What makes this one different is that I used my sunglasses as a filter. Literally, just holding up my sunglasses in front of the iPhone camera lens and “snap”. The result is a strangely lit, almost ghost-like quality to the trees. Completely unedited or post-processed. -
I went out for a run Monday evening. It was early enough that there was still plenty of light when I left. But night falls pretty quickly in New England in the winter. By the time I was finishing up, the lights had all come on and the sun was almost completely set.I took this picture as I was walking off the run. Something about the streetlight and the light it cast struck me. The streetlight was a weird amber color, while behind it the sky changed from light blue to deep blue behind the dark trees.
Composition in the picture is pretty unremarkable. What drew me was entirely the range of colors and shadows.

I didn’t get out much today. It was a “clean the house” kind of day, and I didn’t think pictures of used Swiffer sheets would be all that compelling. So, in lieu of something interesting, it’ll just have to be something pretty. Here’s a picture of the sunset, as seen through the trees outside my front door.See you tomorrow.

This view used to include trees. I have some pictures of the space when it was still trees. I walked by it everyday around lunch when I would go out to stretch my legs. Now it’s a construction site. This will be a Hilton Garden Inn when it’s done. Cause that’s just what the world needs…another hotel. Any time I encounter a situation like this, I automatically think of the Lorax.Today was an overcast day, with a weak sun poking through the clouds. I took the picture using ProCam, with the Ztylus wide angle lens attachment. I imported the picture into Snapseed, where I applied a couple of filters. The first filter was something called Drama, which can really make a sky pop out at you. The second filter was a black and white contrast filter. I like how ominous the result makes the hotel look.

I still really struggle with night photography on the iPhone. Then again, in fairness, the iPhone doesn’t have the full range of capabilities that a SLR camera has (the iPhone has a fixed aperture, which can’t be changed no matter what app you use) and I’m always trying to take picture of the moon (a really difficult subject).I snapped this one using night mode on ProCam. The thing I like most is that it captured the beauty of the clouds and trees in the moonlight. And Venus. I think that smaller dot is Venus.
The thing I don’t like is that there was just no way to tone down how bright the moon was in the shot. It totally overpowered the rest of the sky.
I’ll keep trying, but for now, this is what I got.

We have such great trees where we live. I’m not sure what I expected, but such tall pines were a surprise when we moved the New England nearly twenty years ago. The pines in this picture are right outside my front door. The day was stunning, warming nicely and sunny as all get-out. I took this picture up into the underside of the pines, with the afternoon sun lighting the undersides of the branches. I added a filter at the end. It didn’t need one, but I liked ’70s summery feeling it gave the photo.
